SEGAS SAILING CLUB DEVELOPMENT FAQs

1. What is the current status of Segas Sailing Club?
Segas Sailing Club is more than just a sailing club; we are an active community involved in local events, heritage preservation, and collaboration with other river user groups. We have worked with local councillors, MPs, and other stakeholders to secure our club’s future.

2. What was the original proposal from Blueberry Homes?
Blueberry Homes initially proposed relocating Segas Sailing Club into a multi-storey tower block with an undercroft for storage. However, this proposal did not meet our needs for affordable access to the water, security, and necessary facilities.

3. Why was the tower block proposal rejected?
We could not see how our essential needs—such as access to the creek, deep-water moorings, a separate clubhouse, tender storage, and parking—could be adequately met within a tower block. It was also difficult to see how such two divers uses (sailing club & prestige residential development) of the site could co-exist as good neighbours.

4. What agreement has been reached for the club’s future?
After discussions with the Council, Blueberry Homes, Medway Water Sports, and Medway Cruising Club, we have secured an agreement in principle for the following:

  • A new separate two-storey clubhouse to be built adjacent to the MCC clubhouse, for joint use by Segas and MWS members.

  • Continued access to and use of the creek, with further discussions on pontoon provisions.

  • Retention of access to our deep-water moorings.

  • Tender storage and parking at the current MWS site, which will become a joint Segas/MWS site (with boat storage limited to canoes and hovercraft).

  • A new secure compound for boat storage at Bloor’s Wharf, with utilities, shelter, and storage.

5. What are the next steps in the development process?
In the coming weeks, we will meet with the council and developers to finalise the design, access, and construction details of our new facilities. We will also develop an implementation timetable covering lease agreements, costs, operating procedures, health & safety, business continuity, and guarantees.

6. Will club activities be disrupted during development?
There is an understanding among all parties that we must continue our activities during development. We will provide advance notice of any planned disruptions, but members are encouraged to stay informed and monitor the situation.

7. What should members do about their personal belongings at the site?
Members should review any belongings they have at the site, such as boat parts, tenders, cradles, and stands. Arrangements are in place to move cradles, and discussions are ongoing about creating a block of drying moorings with Gillingham Marina.

8. What does this mean for the future of Segas Sailing Club?
This agreement ensures a strong and sustainable future for the club. While some changes are inevitable, they are manageable with a positive mindset and member support. The Council have provided assurances that Blueberry Homes planned developments will not be permitted to continue until our new facilities are in place.
